Cafaro Donation Underwrites Major Library Expansion
The Erie County Public Library (Erie, Pennsylvania) is getting a major financial boost in its plans to expand the Blasco Branch Library’s public computer lab. The Cafaro Foundation has awarded a $100,000 grant to the project. The foundation is affiliated with the Youngstown, Ohio-based Cafaro Company, the private real estate and shopping center development firm that owns the Millcreek Mall.
Retired Cafaro President Anthony Cafaro, Sr. presented a check for the project to Library Director Mary Rennie on Wednesday, June 17. "This is a major donation that really comes across as an expression of faith in what we're trying to do," Rennie said. "Needless to say, I'm very excited. We haven't even done any active fundraising."
Rennie said $50,000 of the funding will be received this year, and the rest in 2016. The money can be used for any purpose related to the project. It would expand the existing public computer lab, which currently serves about 125,000 patrons a year at no cost; and provide on-site research assistance, as well as meeting space, for local entrepreneurs or those looking to start a business.
"The Cafaro family is extremely pleased to make this commitment to the Erie Regional Library Foundation and the Blasco Library Idea Lab," said Mr. Cafaro.
The Cafaro Foundation is a charitable entity established by the Cafaro family in loving memory of William M. Cafaro, the founder of the real estate development and management company that bears his name. For over a half century, Mr. Cafaro, along with his wife Alyce and brother John A. Cafaro, enthusiastically supported churches, schools, hospitals and other charitable causes. Since its inception in 1996, the Cafaro Foundation has awarded millions of dollars in grants to worthy organizations and individuals.
